Clare Morrall, President of the Grenada Triathlon Association recently took an opportunity to visit coach Barrie Shepley and athlete Marc DeCaul while she was away on a business trip. Barrie and Marc were in Orlando, Florida at the end of a training camp and Clare was lucky enough to fit in a brief meeting with them. Clare also took the opportunity to join in with a swim training session at the National Training Centre close to the athletes ‘home’ base. Marc is sharing a rented holiday home with three training partners. The National Training Centre facilities with a 10 lane, 50 m beautiful outdoor pool with wonderful indoor amenities and facilities (including a massive fully stocked gym) made Clare deeply envious! Marc and training partners are making use of a nearby park and relatively quiet and smooth roads for bike training and a local lake serves as an open water training venue. In addition to training with athletes coached by Barrie Shepley, Marc trains with a local cycling group twice a week and swim trains with a local team at the National Training centre.
Clare was able to talk with Barrie and together they devised a training schedule that will prepare her for the World Championships in Germany at the end of August this year, Clare plans to train with Barrie in Canada for 6 weeks leading up to this race. It was insightful to see Marc and other fully committed athletes training with great facilities and invaluable teamwork and support from fellow athletes. Marc is currently doing base work for an important 2007 season, then will be returning to the Caribbean to race at home in the 20th Annual Grenada Triathlon, in the Tobago Triathlon and in the Barbados National Championships before he returns to Canada to continue training & racing.
