Two athletes from Grenada have recently returned from Trinidad after taking part in a four day coaching course. Clare Morrall, President of the Grenada Triathlon Association (GTA) and Troy Felix, joined 24 coaches and triathletes from the region for the Community Coaching Triathlon Course run by the International Triathlon Union (ITU). Clare and Troy spent the long weekend in the company of some highly accomplished coaches and athletes from the USA, Canada, Antigua, Bermuda, Barbados, Tobago and Trinidad.
The course was led by Alan Ley, ITU Sport Development Officer, who was joined by Gale Bernhardt from the USA and Tracey Shelley of Canada on the teaching staff. The aim of the course was to prepare community coaches to teach grassroots and youth triathlon programmes. ITU’s global sponsor, BG Group, and the Triathlon federation of Trinidad and Tobago partnered with ITU in the presentation of this course. BG have recently committed to sponsoring the ITU over the next nine years! Clare and Troy’s participation was partially supported by the Ministry of Sport in Grenada and by the Grenada Triathlon Association.
“We were extremely pleased to have the opportunity to send two representatives from Grenada to this coaching course. Both have gained valuable experience and by meeting other coaches from the region and working with international teaching staff, they will be able to bring much more to our own teaching and training programmes for young Grenadian triathletes. We are very thankful for the support for the running of the course offered by BG and locally from the Ministry of Sport” said Liz DeCaul, GTA Secretary.
Clare and Troy are now training to compete in the annual Grenada International Triathlon, which will be held on 5th and 6th May. This year’s race is the 20th Annual event and will be staged from L’Ance aux Epines Cottages; as well as the ever-popular Sprint and Half Sprint events the GTA is introducing more children’s races and fun relays to encourage even more people to come and ‘Tri-a-Triathlon’- there will truly be a race to suit everyone! Come out, or enter a family, company or school team. For further details on the annual race (including how to be a sponsor or how to register) or for more information about the sport of Triathlon, contact Liz DeCaul on 415 1271, or check the Association’s website www.grenadatriathlon.com
We look forward to seeing you at the races soon!
