Grenadas National Champ takes title in Tobago
Grenadian Triathlete & National Champion, Marc DeCaul added another title to his collection by winning the Olympic Distance individual triathlon, the main event at The Rainbow Cup International Triathlon held on Saturday 19th May in the beautiful setting of Grafton Beach in Tobago. Leading the race from start to finish, Marc completed the 1500 meter swim, 40km bike ride and a 10 km run to come across the line 7 minutes ahead of his closest rival. Marc plans to continue his Caribbean race schedule by competing in the Barbados International Triathlon on 3rd June before heading up to Canada for an intensive training period in preparation to represent Grenada at the Pan Am Games in July in Brazil.

Another young Grenadian triathlete also returned home with medals. 15 year old Jake DeCaul placed a commendable 4th overall and second in his age group in the Individual Sprint Race which consisted of a 750 meter swim, 20km bike ride and a 5km run in very tough conditions. Matthew Wright of Barbados, who had taken first place in the Sprint at the recent Grenada International Triathlon, led the race to the mid point of the bike ride when a flat tire forced him to drop out and allowed Matthew Charles of Trinidad to take the lead and the overall win.

The race was very well organized by Jason Gooding of Trinidad and the Rainbow Warriors Triathlon Club, with a great atmosphere and lots of friendly sportsmanship. Grenadian triathletes competed with nearly 100 athletes between the ages of 7 and 65 in a field that was truly international with athletes from all over the region as well as the USA and Germany. Events ranged from 5km fun runs to the shorter distance junior triathlon races, Sprint and Olympic Distance triathlons as well as relays.. The organizers have plans in the pipe-line to make the race a Continental Cup next year which would offer prize money as well as world ranking points to some of the top professional triathletes in the world.
